Go Further With Food

What does this theme, Go Further with Food, mean to you?

To me it means that I can make my food choices influence my health. My health is enhanced by foods that contain a balance of nutrients and include dietary fiber, unsaturated fats and very little added salt or sugar.

Some of the things to look at when you’re shopping the long aisles at the grocery store include the following -

Bread

  • 2 – 3 gram fiber per 15 gram carbohydrate
  • ‘whole grain’ as one of the first ingredients

Cereal

  • 2 or more grams of protein per oz (serving)
  • 5 grams fiber per serving
  • Less than 8 grams sugar per serving

Bars:

  • At least 3 grams fiber
  • At least 5 grams protein
  • Definitely less than 35% calories from sugar!  [each gram of sugar is 4 calories]
  • Calories
    • Around 150 for a snack bar
    • 250 calories or more for a meal replacement

Frozen meals:

  • One or more servings of vegetables in the meal
  • A serving of whole grain
  • 10 – 18 grams total fat, or less than 30% of total calories [each gram of fat is 9 calories]
  • Less than 4 grams saturated fat
  • Less than 600mg sodium
  • 5 grams of fiber, or more
  • 10% USRDA vitamins/minerals
  • 10 – 20 grams protein
