Summer Wellness Ambassador of the Month | Jonathan Villavert

Quick Summary

  • The most rewarding part of being a wellness ambassador is hearing from people who have benefited from what I've shared or the activities they've participated in.

How long have you worked at UC Davis?

I have been with UC Davis for 11 years (+ 1 year as an undergrad student employee)!

What does Wellness mean to you?

For me, wellness is a conscious choice and an intentional practice to develop and maintain healthy habits that benefit both mind and body, planting seeds for self-actualization, while letting go of obstacles that prevent continuous and meaningful growth.

Why did you become a wellness ambassador?

I took this on primarily as a way to fulfill my need for community and connection during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a means to connect with people who, like me, may have been feeling the effects of limited interactions and were seeking opportunities to improve their own well-being.

How long have you been a wellness ambassador?

I have been a wellness ambassador for nearly 2 years.

What has been the most rewarding or positive part about your experience thus far?

The most rewarding part of being a wellness ambassador is hearing from people who have benefited from what I've shared or the activities they've participated in.

What are some challenges you face as a wellness ambassador?

Some challenges I face as a wellness ambassador is that we have a very large group of people with various work arrangements from in-office to hybrid to 100% remote across several careers and in some cases, out of state. Arranging activities that are inclusive for such a large variety of community members can be daunting.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with new wellness ambassadors?

If you need help, never be afraid to ask! There have been challenges being an ambassador for such a large group and when I asked if anyone would be interested in being a co-ambassador, Maureen Gomez stepped up, and she has been a massive help! Thanks, Maureen!

Staff and Faculty Health and Well-being aims to build an environment that makes the healthier choice the easier one, while providing staff and faculty with the required support to make UC Davis the healthiest community. How do you feel you have contributed to our mission?

I like to think that the activities and challenges that I've posted on our Slack channel have really gotten people to think more consciously about self-care. I've had some gracious feedback in the past, so that is very encouraging!

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I love to cook. Especially developing new soup recipes, BBQing/Smoking various things, and occasionally fermenting hot sauces, veggies, beverages, etc. Of course I love sharing food too. Potlucks are my jam!
