October Wellness Ambassador of the Month | Corrie Stone

Quick Summary

  • "Don't be scared to try new things! I believe it's healthy to step outside of your comfort zone!"

Wellness Ambassador of the Month
Corrie Stone of UC Davis Fire Department

How long have you worked at UC Davis?

I have worked at UC Davis for 7 years.

What does Wellness mean to you?

Wellness to me means happiness and healthiness from the inside out, setting attainable goals and practicing wholesome habits.

Why did you become a wellness ambassador?

Upon the creation of our health and wellness committee within our department, I stumbled upon the Wellness Ambassador program. I applied to learn about all the perks, trainings and information that I could share with my department in the hopes to enhance our well-being overall.

How long have you been a wellness ambassador?

I *think* since 2017. 2018 for sure!

What has been the most rewarding or positive part about your experience thus far?

Our department has utilized many resources and programs that have become available. It has been great to see the involvement of our department with instructors or trainers that have made time to come to our department and educate us on a variety of topics, from Nutrition to Tai Chi.

What are some challenges you face as a wellness ambassador, especially through the pandemic?

It's very difficult to cater to a variety of workout needs. One workout may fit the needs and wants of a few people, but that same workout may not cater to other individuals. Like many departments, the Fire Department is made up of all ages, body types, genders and even injuries that prevent some repetitive motion limitations. Providing options increases the likelihood of fitness and participation from all.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with new wellness ambassadors?

Don't be scared to try new things! Sometimes it seems difficult to get participation in a department, but once a few people show up to a free nutritionist or meditation session and see the benefits, the involvement becomes contagious. I believe it's healthy to step outside of your comfort zone!

Staff and Faculty Health and Well-being aims to build an environment that makes the healthier choice the easier one, while providing staff and faculty with the required support to make UC Davis the healthiest community. How do you feel you have contributed to our mission?

I feel my department as a whole has contributed to this mission by being better every day. We may not be where we would love to be in a perfect world, but every day we do what we can and we are healthier, wiser and more educated than we were yesterday.

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

Travel! I love going on road trips, international trips or any kind of trip with my husband and our two dogs (for pet friendly getaways). If we can't make a trip happen, doing any type of outdoor activity, sport or spending time at our family ranch is a breath of fresh air and little piece of heaven.
