Wellness Ambassador of the Month
Maya Spiteri of Obstetrics and Gynecology
How long have you worked at UC Davis?
I have worked for UC Davis Health for almost two years!
What does Wellness mean to you?
Wellness is my happy place where I feel peace of mind and comfortable in my body. Wellness means taking the time and being present to reflect on the full picture, and bridging my physical health with my mental well-being. Wellness is about finding joy in your own journey, and bringing others with you along the way.
Why did you become a wellness ambassador?
I became a wellness ambassador to bring more awareness about resources available to staff in my department. I strive to make my colleagues feel supported in their own wellness goals, as well as bring staff together in a positive and uplifting way.
How long have you been a wellness ambassador?
I have been a wellness ambassador since October 2021!
What has been the most rewarding or positive part about your experience thus far?
The most rewarding aspect of this program so far has been partnering with my fellow Wellness Ambassadors, Shannon James-Bowden and Colleen Anthonisen to apply (and receive!) our department's first Healthy Department Certification, as well as the Wellness Mini-Grant. I am looking forward to using the grant to enrich our department's wellness resources in the coming months.
What are some challenges you face as a wellness ambassador, especially through the pandemic?
The restriction to holding in-person gatherings due to the pandemic has proven to be the biggest roadblock I have experienced with getting people together. Our department is quite large, and trying to make wellness offerings available to everyone takes some serious brain power and creative thinking.
What is one piece of advice you would like to share with new wellness ambassadors?
Wellness is just as unique as we are. Some people unwind with physical activities, or some feel most relaxed with a good book and alone time. I would suggest to be mindful of inclusivity, as wellness can look and feel different for everyone!
Staff and Faculty Health and Well-being aims to build an environment that makes the healthier choice the easier one, while providing staff and faculty with the required support to make UC Davis the healthiest community. How do you feel you have contributed to our mission?
I try my best to provide staff with positivity and support in whatever goals they are working towards. Whether it be cheerleading for them to try a new hobby, inviting them on a morning walk, or simply asking how their vacation was, I try to bring a culture of health, comradery and joy to the workplace.
What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?
In my free time, I am almost always on the hunt for vinyl records, outrageously expensive avocado toast, and a strong coffee. I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills, where there are gorgeous areas to take my paddle board, practice yoga, and hammock to my heart's content.
