Theft Warning: Catalytic Converter Thefts Are on the Rise
Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise, impacting not only the public but some of our departments here at UC Davis.
Although hybrid vehicles appear to be targeted at higher rates, other types are also vulnerable to similar incidents.
Recently, a departmental vehicle parked offsite had its catalytic converter stolen on October 23. The vehicle was taken to Fleet Services for repairs and it was released to the department. On November 3, the department discovered the catalytic converter had been stolen a second time so they brought the vehicle back to Fleet Services for repairs. Once the vehicle was repaired it was parked in a slightly more visible area but on November 19, it was discovered that the catalytic converter was stolen a third time.
The University’s auto insurance program has $1,000 deductible per event. Therefore, in addition to the time and effort to get the vehicle repaired twice, the department had to spend $2,000 within 11 days and is now considering how to proceed with the third incident.
When securing a vehicle in a garage or locked parking structure is not an option, other deterrents may need to be considered. Options may vary depending on the vehicle’s year, make and model. Any department interested in learning more about this option, should contact Fleet Services by email at at FleetServices@ucdavis.edu or call their shop line at (530) 752-0789.
