Research with human source materials including primary cells, immortalized cell lines, blood, body fluids, or unfixed tissue requires adhering to the UC Davis Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan
The campus-wide Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan (BBP-ECP) protects personnel from potential exposures in accordance with the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard: California Code of Regulation, Title 8, Section 5193.
- For additional information on Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, see SafetyNet #36
A BUA is Still Necessary
Completion and adoption of the bloodborne pathogen exposure control plan does not substitute for obtaining a Biological Use Authorization (BUA) from the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), which authorizes the possession, storage, transfer, and use of the biohazardous materials noted in an exposure control plan.
Further, completion, maintenance, and training on the Lab Specific BBP-ECP Fact Sheet is a prerequisite for securing and maintaining IBC approval of your BUA.
Hepatitis
Protection from hepatitis B virus via the hepatitis B virus vaccination series is an important component of our BBP-ECP Contact the Occupational Health Physician for more information.
