A safe and successful academic year begins with ensuring that laboratory personnel, training records and safety programs are current.
Lab Managers, Safety Delegates and PIs are encouraged to review the following steps to help their laboratories remain safe, compliant and organized throughout Fall 2026.
Start the Academic Year Safely
Review the following steps to keep your laboratory safe, compliant and organized throughout Fall 2026.
1. Update Your Group Roster
Make sure your laboratory roster accurately reflects your current personnel.
- Remove departed members: Remove anyone who left the laboratory over the summer.
- Add new personnel: Add all incoming researchers and staff members to the appropriate group roster.
2. Complete Mandatory Trainings & Requirements
Confirm that all new and returning laboratory members have completed their required safety training.
- Laboratory Safety Fundamentals: Initial course required for all new lab personnel.
- Site-Specific Initial Safety Training: Individual, one-time training for your specific lab space.
- Annual Safety Refresher: Group-wide training required every year.
- PPE Training: Completed directly at the end of the Laboratory Hazard Assessment Tool (LHAT) process.
