Annual Safety Inspections for All University Vehicles

Annual safety inspections are required for all University Vehicles in accordance with Policy 300-30 and BFB-BUS-46

Beginning in May 2026, all UC Davis vehicles — both Department-Controlled Vehicles (DCVs) and Fleet-leased vehicles — must be inspected annually by Fleet Services.

Inspection Overview

Safety inspections will vary by vehicle but, at a minimum, include:

  • Engine and drivetrain
  • Steering and suspension
  • Lighting
  • Brakes
  • Tires
  • Wheels and bearings

Fleet Services will:

  • Send inspection reminders on Monday mornings, 30 days prior to the inspection due date
  • Centrally manage and track all required safety inspections and records

Vehicles that do not meet safety standards will require corrective action before being returned to service.

University Vehicles Requiring Inspection

  • All on-road vehicles
  • Trailers

The following are excluded:

  • Boats
  • Off-road agricultural equipment
  • Golf carts
  • Unitrans vehicles, as they report safety inspections directly to the California Highway Patrol and Risk Management.

Scheduling Inspections

Inspections for Fleet-leased vehicles are included in the lease rate. Inspections for DCVs will be billed at the current hourly rate.
