From the College of Biological Sciences, this year's winner is Dr. Gregg Recanzone
The Recanzone Lab studies age-related hearing loss, focusing on how the brain functions differently as it ages. By understanding these changes, Dr. Recanzone and his team hope to slow the progression of hearing loss, reverse its effects, or prevent it altogether. Their long-term goal is to develop simple, inexpensive ways to help people communicate more effectively with family and friends, leading to more fulfilling lives in their later years.

From day one, safety is a top priority in the Recanzone Lab. New members undergo extensive training, which can sometimes take several weeks, before they are cleared to begin lab work. Staff Research Associate Melissa Stroud noted that Dr. Recanzone and Katie “promote an open conversation regarding hazards and risks” and ensure that safety is always the top priority.
The collaborative tone established through training carries into the lab’s research environment. Sharing space with four other research groups means that safety is a shared responsibility at all levels. Lab manager Katie Neverkovec plays a crucial role in supporting these standards. “Maintaining high communication nurtures a proactive mindset,” she explained.
“Ensuring everyone is a part of process development, refinement and training enhances our safety culture.”
This emphasis on open dialogue ensures that a safe learning environment exists not only at the Recanzone lab but across the entire shared research space.
Beyond collaboration and shared responsibilities, trust is a central value felt deeply by the research team itself. “Everyone looks out for one another and considers how their actions may affect others,” said lab member Danyi Lu. “I am proud to be part of a team where safety is not just an obligation but a natural way of working together.”
By incorporating safety into every level of their research, from training to day-to-day operations, the Recanzone Lab demonstrates how a collective approach ensures both scientific progress and the well-being of everyone involved.
