Radiation Safety Updates: Inventory, Training and Manual Revisions
Radioactive Materials Semi-Annual Inventory
Maintaining an accurate radioactive material inventory helps ensure a safe workplace for those working with or around radioactive materials.
UC Davis is required to conduct a semi-annual physical inventory to account for radioactive material received and possessed under UC Davis' license.
Beginning in 2025, all labs with a radiation use authorization (RUA) must complete a physical inventory of all radioactive materials and sealed sources twice a year, in March and September, and validate it against their digital inventory found in the RSS UC Radiation application.
A guide on how to record material use and track inventory is included within SafetyNet #61: How to Maintain an Inventory/ Log for Radioactive Materials in Your Laboratory.
Additionally, EH&S professionals will verify the RAM/Sealed Source inventory during their annual or semi-annual RUA audits.
Please direct any questions to Radiation Safety at radsafety@ucdavis.edu.
Radiation Annual Refresher Training
Principal Investigators are required to provide an annual refresher training on radiation safety for personnel listed on the Radiation Use Authorization (RUA).
Training should cover specific hazards and protective measures, procedures and safety protocols for the RUA.
These training sessions must be documented by the PI and include:
- An outline of the subjects covered
- Instructor/PI name
- Personnel in attendance
- Date the training was conducted
The annual refresher training can be documented using the existing EH&S Lab Safety Annual Training Form or your Department/School-specific annual refresher form (see example School of Medicine Annual Safety Training Summary).
This is separate training from the campus radiation courses such as, Radiation Safety for Users of Radioactive Materials, UC Davis Radiation Safety, and the Radioactive Material Refresher Training.
Authorized radiation users must have current annual radiation refresher training as this will be a part of your radiation audit starting 07/01/2025.
For questions about the radiation annual refresher training, contact Radiation Safety at radsafety@ucdavis.edu.
