SafetyNet 138: Portable Torch Safety Update

Safety Services has officially revised SafetyNet 138 – Portable Torch Safety. While the core purpose of this resource remains the same—preventing injury when using portable torches—this updated version includes visual aids to help users better understand the most common types of portable torches to which this SafetyNet applies and the required hose attachments for portable torch use. It helps outline operating and leak testing procedures. 

The prior SafetyNet was developed based on findings from a previous accident and a Cal/OSHA inspection. It provided information on department and employee responsibilities, as well as operating guidelines, broken down into sections: general precautions, general cautions, and general warnings. The new version focuses on providing information on departmental responsibilities related to hot work requirements, as portable torch use is considered hot work. Additionally, information is expanded to support equipment and gas selection, pre-use precautions, torch operation, storage requirements, leak-testing procedures, and maintenance. 

The revised SafetyNet provides this updated information by:

  • Visual Aids: Utilizes visual aids to assist the end user in understanding the type of portable torches this SafetyNet relates to, what a direct connect torch is (prohibited), and what hose connections (allowed) look like.  Additionally, it provides detailed information on common gases used with portable torches and how to select them based on temperature requirements.
  • Adding in hot work requirements: The prior SafetyNet did not include information on designated hot work locations or applying for a Hazardous conditions/Hot Work permit, required PPE selection, or Fire Watch requirements
  • Outlining equipment and gas-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): This document provides information to help departments understand their responsibility in creating SOPs based on specific equipment and gases to be used for the particular task.
  • Adding in storage requirements for torches and gases: A section has been added based on semi-frequent inspection findings where torches and gases are improperly stored. 

All departmental facilities managers, shop managers, field operation managers, and lab managers are encouraged to read the revised SafetyNet #138. It provides valuable information to help ensure compliance with UC Davis-specific requirements for portable torches and safe use to help prevent future accidents.
