Heather Segale – Tahoe Environmental Research Center

How long have you worked at UC Davis?

I have worked at UC Davis for 18 years.

What does Wellness mean to you?

Wellness is caring for the mind, body, and soul through practices that help maintain the various dimensions of wellness (physical, spiritual, emotional, occupational, intellectual, environmental, financial, and social). Wellness means thriving both at work and personally. Currently, it is primarily about stress management and team building during a stressful time.

Why did you become a wellness ambassador?

My goal as a wellness ambassador was to bring the amazing resources of the UC Davis Staff and Faculty Health and Well-being Department to our team located off-campus at Lake Tahoe.

How long have you been a wellness ambassador?

I have been a wellness ambassador since 2018.

What has been the most rewarding or positive part about your experience thus far?

Our team really enjoyed the on-site Wellness Workshop provided by the team as well as the Outdoor Stress Management Zone (especially important during COVID to provide a safe and comfortable outdoor space for our staff).

What are some challenges you face as a wellness ambassador, especially through the pandemic?

It is difficult to get our entire team on the same page regarding requests and participation, but when we do get everyone involved it is worth it!

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with new wellness ambassadors?

Apply for the mini-grant and start with small steps.

Staff and Faculty Health and Well-being aims to build an environment that makes the healthier choice the easier one, while providing staff and faculty with the required support to make UC Davis the healthiest community. How do you feel you have contributed to our mission?

I try to share the amazing resources from the UC Davis campus with our remote team.

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I enjoy outdoor activities including skate-skiing, downhill skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and just walking with my dog. I also enjoy a good book or movie with my husband (and usually my dog curled up nearby too).
