Hamid Fonooni Elected as ABET President

ABET (The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) Board of Delegates elected UC Davis' Hamid Fonooni as its 2022-2023 President-elect.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to represent UC Davis as a leader at ABET where I can give back to the profession. This would not have been possible without the support of the leadership in Occupational Health and Safety Services." -- Hamid Fonooni, Director of the Ergonomics Program, Occupational Health Services.

ABET is a federation of 35 member societies that accredits college and university programs in the disciplines of applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology at the associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree levels in the US and globally.  Hamid has served as a volunteer and leader at ABET since early 2000.

Prior to working at UC Davis, Hamid held two tenured faculty positions in academia. He served as the Director of Master of Science in Occupational Safety at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina for 10 years. He also served as the Director of Master of Environmental Health and Safety Program at the University of Minnesota-Duluth for 12 years. He has published numerous articles, book chapters, papers, and technical reports related to occupational ergonomics, biomechanics, and occupational safety and health.

Additionally, Hamid has approximately 10 years of industrial experience, which includes eight years working as a Senior Ergonomics Engineer for the Ohio Division of Safety and Hygiene serving industries in Northwest Ohio. In this capacity, he provided consultation in the areas of ergonomics, process improvement, and risk management to industries in Northern Minnesota and Eastern North Carolina.

Hamid received his doctoral and master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and his undergrad degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Indiana State University. He is a Board-Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) and leads ergonomics efforts for UC Davis Campus staff and faculty.
