Formic Acid Storage: Check Whether Venting Is Required
Review formic acid storage requirements to determine whether periodic venting is needed.
Higher concentrations of formic acid may require periodic venting to prevent pressure from building up inside the container. Review the product-specific safety data sheet (SDS) for the formic acid in your laboratory, including the manufacturer’s storage requirements in Section 7, to determine whether venting is required.
Before Handling the Bottle
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including a lab coat, chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. Visually inspect the container before handling it.
If the bottle or cap is bulging, or the container appears damaged or otherwise suspect, do not move it. Contact Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) for assistance.
If Periodic Venting Is Required
Follow these steps for containers that pass the visual inspection:
- Move the formic acid to a fume hood or glove box, if appropriate. When using a fume hood, keep the sash lowered.
- Slowly open the bottle away from your body, carefully allowing excess pressure to escape, then securely close it.
- Return the bottle to its designated storage location.
- Repeat the procedure at least annually, following the manufacturer’s requirements, and record each venting date. A suggested Formic Acid Venting Record Sheet is available for this purpose.
