Meet Audrey Sulkanen, Hazardous Materials Specialist

Audrey recently started as Hazardous Material Specialist for Fire Prevention Services.

Audrey is in the process of finishing her PhD program under Dr Gang-yu Liu in the department of Chemistry at UC Davis. Her research focused on 3D Nano printing and the creation of structures out of different systems including mechanically sensitive mechanophore. Before coming to UC Davis, she completed her undergrad in Chemistry at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

During her time at UC Davis, Audrey has taken many roles including head Teaching Assistant (TA) for the general chemistry classes. She was the head TA for two general chemistry classes at the same time, which included up to 700 students per quarter, while overseeing 18 other TAs. She also served as a liaison between the faculty and TAs. She worked well with a variety of professors. She enjoyed mentoring other head TA’s. She worked to streamline tasks by moving documents to Google forms and focused on making the process more efficient.

While completing her PhD, Audrey also had the role of Lab Safety Officer for four years. Her safety advice is “You need to build safety into the process and make it easy to do.” For example, keeping safety equipment such as tongs or an extinguisher nearby.

“Make it easier to succeed because the lab members have a million other things on their mind."

In her new role, Audrey hopes she can help with repeated violation such as chemical compatibility. She wants to make sure lab personnel are not afraid to ask questions and she wants to be approachable. In her first days in her new role, Audrey is enjoying seeing more of campus and learning about the variety of research. She says, “It is exciting you get to meet so many brilliant people."

When asked about hobbies, Audrey says, she has too many. Her current ones include wood working at the wood studio on campus, where she built a board game table. She likes 3D printing and has her own 3D printer.

Audrey has an 80-pound dog, Freddie, who is a Rottweiler/German Sheppard mix. Freddie is great dog but Audrey is still working on integrating him with her two cats, Snowbell and Delilah.

When asked how she plans to celebrate her graduation, Audrey remarked that it's hard to travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, but hopes to one day visit Yellowstone National Park.
