This year’s College of Biological Sciences Lab Safety Award winner is Dr. Xiaomo Chen
The Chen Lab studies the neural mechanisms behind cognitive functions, with a specific focus on visual attention. Dr. Chen's research team is also dedicated to pioneering innovative approaches that understand and enhance those essential cognitive functions.
Safety is essential to the lab’s daily operations, where potential hazards are ever-present. Dr. Chen emphasizes that safety begins from the moment lab members walk through the door and encourages open communication and shared responsibility. Every individual receives detailed hands-on training and is encouraged to connect with others and ask questions.
"In order to accomplish our valiant scientific goals, being safe and feeling safe is paramount to that success." Dr. Chen notes. Providing a culture of safety begins with ensuring the processes in place are the most up-to-date and then fostering the culture of turning mistakes into whole group growth opportunities.”
The lab promotes peer learning, where team members are trained on new tasks and then must relay what they have learned to another lab member, before reviewing with a supervisor. Collaboration is encouraged so that no one works alone unless absolutely necessary. The lab also conducts an annual group training session and frequent refresher courses throughout the year to stay updated on the latest safety protocols.
Looking ahead, the Chen Lab plans to expand its research while maintaining a strong commitment to safety. The team is dedicated to fostering a supportive environment that promotes a healthy and happy work culture.
