Injury & Illness Trends

Lessons Learned from March 2012 Injuries:

  • Injury: Lower back strain from picking up bowls and carrying across the work station.
    • Prevention: Lift only the weight you can readily manage, use table carts, perform daily stretches and exercise for back and core strength conditioning. Make and take the time to get in the "Safe Habit" of daily stretches (use this Wellness portal webpage).
  • Injury: Pain in both feet from constant weight bearing.
    • Prevention: Rest and use of shoe sole inserts.
  • Injury: Headache due to smell emanating from floor drain.
    • Prevention: Floor drain fitted with a removable plug to stop odors from entering the room. Another option is the voluntary use of organic vapor respirators.
  • Injury: Left elbow pain after moving several file cabinets.
    • Prevention: Remove file drawers to reduce the weight and use hand trucks designed for taller objects, get assistance as needed.
  • Injury: Left ankle sprain - happened walking down stairs, missed a step and fell.
    • Prevention: Use handrails and pay attention to surroundings.
