Animal Bites
In an effort to standardize campus signage for first aid procedures for animal bites and standardize training of employees and students having animal exposure as part of the job or class-work, the following materials have been compiled for campus-wide distribution. Materials were compiled by Occupational Health Services in conjunction with the campus veterinarian and Cowell Student Health Center.
First Aid Procedures for Animal Bites - Notice for Posting
Recommended for use as a posted notice to provide students, staff, and faculty with basic first aid procedures for animal bites.
Medical Care of Bites - Helpful Information
Provides additional information about the medical care of bites from various types of animals and special circumstances. If space allows, it is recommended that it be posted next to the First Aid Procedures for Animal Bites notice. If posting space is not available, this document can be placed in the departmental Injury Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).
Post Test for First Aid Procedures
Have the individual submit the completed, signed, and dated Post Test to their supervisor or department Safety Officer. Maintain copies of the completed Post Tests in the Departmental IIPP as documentation of training.
Bite Prevention
There are a significant number of bites each year to students and employees handling animals. It is recommended that departments:
- Provide written and practical training sessions on a regular basis on how to prevent bites caused by the types of animals handled.
- Contact your Environmental Health and Safety advisor if you need assistance in developing these materials.
