Post Approval Monitoring Program

Purpose

The purpose of the Post Approval Monitoring Program is to ensure that research and teaching activities involving live vertebrate animals are conducted in accordance with all applicable regulations and are consistent with the Principal Investigator’s IACUC-approved Animal Care and Use Protocol and amendments.

Policy

Any approved Animal Care and Use Protocol may be subjected to post approval monitoring, as follows.

  • Ten percent of recently approved projects will be selected and reviewed annually by the IACUC.
  • Multiple Survival Surgery (MSS) - Every approved Animal Care and Use Protocol that involves multiple survival surgery will be reviewed at least once after it has become active.
  • Conditionally Approved Protocols - Every Animal Care and Use Protocol that has been approved with a condition will have the condition reviewed at least once.

Procedures

The IACUC office will coordinate with the PI or the PI’s designee to schedule the review. The review will be conducted using the Post Approval Monitoring Form (Attachment 1). Any deficiencies or deviations from the approved protocol and amendments will be noted and corrective actions and timelines will be discussed.

If the deficiency or deviation is not corrected within the allotted timeframe, or if there are repeated deficiencies or deviations, the Principal Investigator’s Animal Care and Use Protocol(s) may be suspended by the IACUC, and AAALAC, OLAW, and USDA will be notified, as appropriate.

The Principal Investigator will receive a copy of the final written report. The report will be submitted to the IACUC for review, discussion, and approval during a convened IACUC meeting.
