Recording Census
Purpose:
To accurately account for all animals used in research, teaching and testing that are covered by an animal care and use protocol.
Procedure:
- Record the department, month, year, species, building and room in the appropriate sections of the census form.
- Record the PI and billing ID in the appropriate section of the census form.
- The census form has three columns. Each column is used for a single PI and protocol. In other words, the census of up to three protocols can be maintained on one form.
- All animals are counted individually (except mice and fish) and the total recorded on the cesus form. This is done no less than on a weekly basis, and preferably on a daily basis.
- For mice, the number of cages is recorded after cage changing.
- Rodents with litters are counted as a single animal until they are weaned (typically 21 days).
- Larger animals (cats and dogs) are considered a single unit until weaning age.
- The billing cycle runs from the 1st of the months to the last day of the following month.
- Census forms are due to the Attending Veterinarian by the 5th of the month.
- Forms can be faxed to the Attending Veterinarian at 752-2553, submitted electronically to mguilfoil@ucdavis.edu or mailed to Matthew Guilfoil at the Office of Administration, 436 Mrak Hall.
