Injury & Illness Prevention:

Departmental safety leadership by management, supervisors, and PI’s, plus employee’s daily managing their personal risk by modifying behavior accordingly reduces risk and makes the difference. In addition, all the efforts of Departmental Safety Coordinators (DSC’s) & EHS Departmental Safety Advisors (DSA’s) and Occupational Health staff assist in reducing the likelihood of injury/illness and addressing those already injured.

Unfortunately there were a few, more significant 2008-2009 injuries. One due to a potential equipment defect, a vehicle accident, but most readily addressed with a strong safety program emphasizing  behavioral awareness; i.e. ‘awareness of your surroundings’, noting your body position in relation to stationary objects;

·        Small propane gas cylinder flash burns through crack in cylinder housing

·        Hitting head on doorway, neck injury

·        Catching toe of shoe on uneven pavement and falling

·        Standing on step stool & losing balance

·        Vehicle accident

·        Slip and fall on oily surface

·        Walking backwards and tripping

·        Straining forearms with heavy files
