SafetyNet #110 - Guidelines for Completing the Chemical Waste Label

State and Federal regulations require all hazardous waste to be properly labeled. Proper labeling of hazardous waste is essential to the health and safety of laboratory personnel and EH&S staff. All hazardous waste must be labeled with a "Hazardous Waste" label (03/08) when the container begins being filled. These are available for downloading at http://safetyservices.ucdavis.edu/environmental-health-safety/hazardous-materials/waste-disposal-information-1/wastelbl3_08.doc(MS Word 6.0 format). When completing a hazardous waste label, all of the fields must be completed.

Hazardous Waste Label

1.   Department - Spell out the Department name (i.e., "Molecular & Cellular Biology").

2.   Phone - Include the phone numbers of the individual(s) generating waste and having knowledge of contents of the hazardous waste.

3.   Building - Name of the building that the waste is in - i.e., Tupper Hall.

4.   Room - Room # that the waste is in.

5.   Contact Person(s) - Name of person(s) generating waste and having knowledge of contents of the hazardous waste.

6.  Waste Accumulation Start Date - Indicate the date the waste was first placed in the container, or for a discarded chemical, the date the hazardous waste label was applied. (Note: This item is commonly missed and is an item that is cited by county, state and federal inspectors).

7.  Chemical Waste Composition - Legibly write out all chemical names. Do not abbreviate or draw chemical structures.

8.  Percent by Volume - EH&S staff use this information for processing the waste as safely/inexpensively as possible. Percentages must add up to 100%.

Chemical Waste Composition      Percent (by volume)

Nitric Acid                                      73%

Water                                            27%

9.  Physical State - You must indicate at least one physical state for your waste.

10. Hazardous Properties - You must indicate the hazardous properties of your waste by checking the appropriate box(s). All liquid waste should be pH checked prior to disposal.

EH&S can not accept any waste that is improperly labeled. Waste technicians will leave improperly labeled waste in your laboratory with a note indicating the corrective action required before the waste can be removed. For additional information, contact your EH&S Safety Advisor, EH&S at 530-752-1493 or hazwaste@ucdavis.edu.
