UC Ready
Continuity Planning for H1N1 (Swine Flu)
UC Ready can help you prepare for continuity issues because of excessive absenteeism associatied with the Pandemic H1N1 (2009) Influenza.
What is UC Ready?
UC Ready is a continuity planning program that is being implemented throughout the University of California system. It is based on a web-based business resumption plan created by UC Berkeley, designed to prepare for a rapid resumption of their teaching, research and public service missions following any unexpected disruption – like an earthquake. It recognized that the core activities of teaching, research, and service are performed at the department level, therefore preparations to continue these activities after a disaster must begin at that level. What is Continuity Planning?

Why is Continuity Management Important?
UC Davis in its entirety—the university, departments, and individuals—needs to be properly prepared for crisis and unusual emergencies.
UC Ready Continuity Plans Identify:
- CRITICAL FUNCTIONS performed by your department, and the factors needed for their continuance.
- INFORMATION AND STRATEGIES that will help during and after the disaster-event.
- ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL needed for continuance of critical operations.
- PLANNING STRATEGIES to ensure that we are better prepared.
- ACTION ITEMS that can be done, starting now, to lessen the impact of these events and make us more resistant, resilient and better ready to cope.

How Does it Work?
The UC Ready web-base software program is the culmination of three years of campus-wide continuity planning experience at UC Berkeley. It currently is being used by more than 200 UCB departments and by more than 20 universities outside of the UC system with very positive feedback.
Continuity plans are developed by all campus units that conduct teaching, and research, and by all units that perform mission-critical support functions. The series of plans that are developed will identify critical functions, essential personnel, planning strategies and action items. Plans are updated annually and tested. The plans developed by each department will be combined to create a larger picture of the business functions of the campus, how they would be affected and how we can best prioritize them to support our academic and research missions.
UC Ready builds on the pandemic planning previously conducted by UC Davis, which focused on an excessive absenteeism planning scenario. The UC Ready process is very similar to the pandemic planning process, and expands the pandemic planning to cover all risks, the possibility of excessive absenteeism, and includes additional critical information such as infrastructure and equipment needs, technology resources, linked dependencies, etc.
