Computer Ergonomics Matching Funds Program for 2008/2009

This program offers up to $500 per employee in matching funds to modify on-site computer workstations. The intent is to provide campus departments a cost-effective way to prevent and/or minimize the effects of computer-related repetitive motion injuries.

Please note, the matching funds program does not apply to computer workstation furniture for new construction, renovation, and relocation projects.

How can my department qualify for matching funds?
The “Be Smart About Safety” Computer Ergonomics Matching Funds Program focuses on ergonomic modification of individual employee computer workstations. The following are the steps to take to qualify for matching funds:
  1. Employees must complete required training.
    • The participating employee must attend Environmental Health and Safety Ergonomic Awareness Class. This free workshop, offered bi-monthly, promotes safe and healthy work practices and the effective use of workstation furniture and accessories.
Enrollment is online through EH&S. Ergonomic Awareness is also available by request in departments with enrollment of 10 or more. Call 530-752-1493 for this information.

      OR
    • The employee may review the workbook “Easy Ergonomics For Desktop Computer Users” and the video “Ergonomics: Setting Up Your Computer Workstation” and complete the Ergonomic Awareness Quiz to meet the training requirements. Each of these is available in hard copy at Environmental Health and Safety (530-752-1493) or by e-mail request to ehsdesk@ucdavis.edu.
    • Matching funds are available for furniture or accessories recommended as a result of a computer workstation evaluation by a Trained Evaluator. Workstation evaluations are the responsibility of each department, using the department’s trained computer workstation evaluators.
    • A Tier I Computer Workstation Evaluation Form with specific recommendations must accompany each application. A copy of the assessment form should also be kept in the department Injury and Illness Prevention Program files.
    • For those departments that do not have a trained evaluator, Environmental Health and Safety offers computer workstation evaluator training through Staff Development. If the desired course is full, please enroll on the wait list and additional courses may be added to accommodate demand.
Enrollment is online through Staff Development and Professional Services. For questions regarding training contact Craig Carrero, 530-752-9715, cmcarrero@ucdavis.edu.
    • Ergonomic evaluations that have been performed by Environmental Health and Safety (Tier II) or Employee Health Services (Tier III) can be submitted with the Office Ergonomic Request Form to apply for matching funds.
    • EH&S recommends that products be seen and tried before purchase to ensure they are appropriate for the employee’s situation. Many of these pre-approved products are available from the Ergonomic Loaner Program or at the Campus Furniture Program. Please see the “Be Smart About Safety” Matching Funds Pre-Approved Product List for details.
