Business Continuity

Continuity planning is the advance preparation and planning that will enable the University to resume its critical operations following an event/disruption of any size or type.

A Business Continuity Plan is a collection of critical information that a person stepping into a leadership role would need in order to manage effectively during the recovery process. Whether it's a wildfire, a mudslide that closes the freeway, or some other natural or human-caused disaster, our campus must be prepared to carry on our core mission of teaching, research, and public service.

UC Ready is a web based continuity planning software tool that is utilized throughout the University of California system.

This system, created at UC Berkeley, was designed to help departments prepare for rapid resumption of the University's mission following any unexpected disruption (e.g. earthquake). The core activities of teaching, research, and public service are performed at the department level; therefore preparations to continue these activities after a disaster should begin at that level.

The UC Ready tool will guide you, step-by-step, to create a continuity plan that:

  • Identifies Priorities: What parts of the operations must come first? This is our business impact analysis (BIA) and is created via the Essential Function and Application questions of UC Ready.
  • Outlines Recovery Strategies: Based on the priorities and risks that we have identified, we then identify strategies for continuing our operations (e.g. working remotely, reciprocal agreements, etc.). Strategies your department may have identified previously have been transitioned over to the upgraded version of UC Ready.

UC Ready Enhancement Project

UC Ready is a web-based software tool that provides a step-by-step process for creating a business continuity plan. It is one component of a systemwide continuity planning program that helps UC manage risks to the University's mission caused by an adverse disruptive event. In early 2014, The UC Ready Enhancement Project was established to improve the functionality of the UC Ready tool. The project’s goal was to identify the key enhancements necessary to continue to grow UC continuity planning efforts. In conjunction with this project, a decision was made to shift the strategic focus of continuity planning from the departmental-level to the campuswide level. The enhanced UC Ready tool will incorporate all of the previous tool's functionality and include key enhancements that enable important strategic shift to include campus level continuity planning efforts.

Some of the key enhancements include:

  • The ability to conduct a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) to identify the most critical functions and time sensitive processes
  • The ability to develop a campuswide mission continuity plan and provide reports at the campus and system-wide levels

The enhancements to UC Ready are being finalized, with campus rollout scheduled to start in September. These enhancements provide for increased functionality and ease of use. This updated version of UC Ready will provide additional value as we work to ensure seamless continuation of essential functions campuswide.
